Evaluation Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you think you have learned from the progression from it to the full product.

Since my preliminary task I have learnt more about 4 main components.
These components are:
  • Camera work
  • Sound
  • Editing
  • Teamwork
Our preliminary task in my opinion wasn't so good, but it was a starting point. Since then, I have learnt from my mistakes, especially in the filming aspect. Since then, I have tried to use a variation of shots. Like I mentioned in my 6th evaluation question, I've tried to include a plethora of different shot angles and camera compositions. These shot angles include of mid shots, close ups, deep focus, establishing shots and rule of thirds. In our preliminary task it was very shaky and quite grainy. In our final task, the quality of the film exceptional.

I've learnt a lot about teamwork, because of the failure of two other ideas for our film, we've had to graft and work hard to catch up as a group. There were times when things didn't go to plan, but at times it went very well. We've had many ups and downs, the first draft we filmed, we have negative feedback, such as shaky filming, no evidence of using a tripod, very vibrant and unnecessary editing. Since this important feedback I've been using a tripod everywhere I film. Charlie's editing is much simpler but much more effective. I was in charge in the making of the story board, so knew exactly what  I had to do, and was always on the ball.

Camera Work Progression

Here are some of the shots I've learnt since my preliminary task;

  • The importance of an Establishing shot and the effectiveness of introducing a scene.
  • Mid shots are good for introducing a character
  • Close ups are very good for giving an insight in whats actually going on, for example, our close up in our opening sequence shows Theo lying on the floor, this shot shows Theo with a black eye, it shows the small details that we wouldn't notice in an other shots.
  • Although some shots are simple, they are the most effective.
  • Rule of thirds are important for creating an interesting shot that is pleasant on the viewers eyes.
  • The Character walking past the camera makes the scene more realistic.
  • Deep focusing: Focusing on a character.

Close up: Giving an insight to what's actually going on.

An Establishing shot: Setting the scene of a place.

Mid shot: Introducing a character.

Rule of thirds: Theo is lying the left hand side of the shot.

Deep focus: Focused on subject, blurry in background.

I've tried to use all the camera angles and shots that I've learnt our media product.

Progression of Sound

Although I am not in charge, I think we as a group and in particular Harry has made a difference since the preliminary task. For example in the preliminary task the sound in lots of ways wasn't very good and it was quite tacky. In our preliminary task, we didn't really look into audio and the best websites to pick from. Since then Harry has spent lots of time making a sound file. As a group we sat down and spoke about the sounds needed for our product, these sounds include of;
  • The Ident sound (Magnetic)
  • Vibrating sound of phone- this continues through whole product
  • Sound of waves crashing on coastline
  • Moving Music (strings and piano) this is non diegetic sound
  • Bird noises to simulate him waking up
  • Background noises in farm house
  • Diegetic sound of character speaking
You can see from this list, that if you listen to our preliminary task, there is a greater variety above in the list that in the preliminary task.

Progression of Editing

Charlie was in charge of editing, Harry and I helped if he didn't judgement on a edit. In our media product we have used a variety of editing techniques. Charlie used these types of edits in our product:
  • Ident shocks from electricity
  • Film titles
  • Cuts
  • In and out fades
  • Dissolves
  • Theo getting up with a gradual fade of his figure
  • Film title ' JJ' on time with the music
You can see from this list, that if you list that we have added a variation of different edits compared to our preliminary in which we didn't have many.

Evaluation Question 6

What have you learnt from the technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Camera and filming.

From doing this task I have learnt a lot about how to film a film. I think the  thing I've learnt most about is the framing and using the rules of thirds to create a cinematic experience. When I was filming I always had my rule of thirds grid out on the screen, this meant that I could sort out a right position to make the shot interesting and pleasant for the viewers eyes. I've also learnt that perhaps overthinking a whacky idea for a shot isn't such a good idea, making a simple shot, tweaking it, using the grid and framing the shot properly is one of the most vital things I've learnt. Focusing is a very important factor too, if your shot isn't in focus, it becomes grainy and unpleasant to view. Another important factor that I have learnt is using a tripod is very crucial, earlier on in the year, I didn't especially pay attention to the shaking of the camera. However, it makes all the difference. Another thing I've learnt is that making the shot long enough so that Charlie can decide how long the shot is going to be when he is editing.
This is the camera I used to film with, I felt comfortable using it because its my personal camera, I knew how it worked and how to adjust shots when needed.

Editing:

Although I wasn't in charge of the editing, I often got involved as a helping hand, Charlie often asked me what I thought of  a type of edit. I've also learnt that editing is a long processes and you have to be very patient. I've also learnt that you have to make the cuts swift so they fit together well. Aiming for realism is important to create verisimilitude.

Sound:

Although I wasn't in change of the sound aspect of the film, I've learnt a lot.  I've learnt that you can only use copy right audios, yet lots of these copy right audios online aren't very good, and only certain websites have good audios.  Also fitting the sound to the edited film, can be a long and difficult process, because the sound and editing have to perfect to make the film flow smoothly.

Evaluation Question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

We used several ways to attract our audience. These include of; The variety of shots, the setting, The enigmas, Mise en scene, Sound and the editing of the film.

The variety of shots:
We used a variety of shots in our film, including establishing shots, close ups, deep focus, and using the rules of thirds. On the left you can see theo in a mid shot.

This is a establishing shot, I think it introduces the setting very well. This is also my favorite shot of the film, because it shows that although the place is very scenic, and beautiful, the dark clouds shows a harsh and tough side of the setting. It shows that perhaps the people living here live through struggle.

This shot here shows two important factors. This shot is a close up. This is an important shot because it reveals JJ's black eye, this creates enigmas, such as why is he bruised and in injured? This shot really reveals the extent of how badly he has been beaten. Unlike the other shots where you couldn't see how badly injured he was. This shot is also a deep focus, JJ's face is sharp and focused, however the background it blurred.

This is the introductory shot of the character. This shot also shows good rules of thirds, you can see JJ lying helplessly in the left hand corner, his whole body is within the frame. The fact that he is in the corner, makes the shot more pleasant on the eye. If JJ were to be lying in the middle of the shot, it wouldn't be as interesting. Our eyes are attracted to corners and intercepting lines.

I believe that good filming is an important factor to intrigue an audience. A good quality film shows
effort and originality. I am happy with the quality and HD of the film, if it were to be grainy the film wouldn't have been so good. A range of different shots is vital to create a cinematic experience. For example I was inspired recently by the film Lion, about an orphan in India who gets adopted by an Australian family. In his mid 20s he decides to find his biological family in India. This film has such charming, creative and appealing filming. Since then I have tried to think more creatively with my filming.

The setting:

We decided to set the film in Sidmouth, a seaside town in Devon. To create a pessimistic atmosphere, I chose to film on a slightly rainy day, I started to film as the rain began to wear off but so you could still see dark rain clouds soaring through the sky. I think that the setting was perfect because it gave a remote and curious vibe to the film. JJ waking up in an inaccessible and remote field gave of the idea that he might have been dumped there and beaten up there. The setting shows that JJ isn't in his normal terrain. The fact that he wakes up in this field, builds up an enigma in the audience's heads, this encourages the audience to become engaged with the film.

Mise en scene:

JJ is wearing typical teenage clothing from an urban environment. This can engage with audience if they have similar tastes in clothing. It could be that some people are intrigued and interested to find out other peoples style of living and how they conduct their lives.

Sound:

In my eyes sound is very important in the making of a film like this. Because certain sounds create a certain atmosphere. For example in our film, the music and sound is quite depressing, this backs up the idea for the audience that the film is about the struggle of a young mans life.

Evaluation Question 2

In what ways your media product represent particular social groups?

We wanted to represent JJ in a particular way. We had Three foundations to help us represent him in this way; Mise en scene/ Costume (the way he is dressed) Regional Identity and Dialogue.

For JJ's costume/ the way he dressed, we decided he would wear a dark clothing. We used a dark jacket, trousers and adidas shoes, a popular teenage shoe brand. Teenagers are stereotyped as being reckless rebellious and mischievous. We decided to fit JJ into this stereotype because it would relate to many young adult of his age. JJs southern English reveals his regional identity. Southern England is seen to be quite a metropolitan and modern place to leave. The fact that he is wearing he is wearing clothes of this generation and clothes seen to have an urban factor to it emphasizes that he is part of a modern society. The fact that he wakes up in a field shows that he is a long way from home. His regional identity doesn't fit the ambience of a seaside town. The dialogue he uses to talk to his drug dealer emphasizes that he is also part of drug culture.

Our finished Product!

This is our finished product, and I am very happy with it!
Our Character-JJ

This is what JJ stereotypically looks like.  He follows a certain trend of clothing and listens to a certain type of music. The photo on the left is Skepta (a popular grime artist) and a few friends posing for a photo, this is what JJ stereotypically looks like and listens too. Skepta grew up in a rough background and made his way up to becoming very affluent and prosperous.
The black clothing that the people are wearing in this photograph is what we have made Theo to wear, who is playing the role of JJ. This clothing is associated roadmans.

This is similar to what JJ is wearing, it is mostly dark clothing, hats, hoods, long trousers, a dark?black jacket. As you can see in the photo, he is mostly covered up with clothing.
Opening sequence: Genre

Our opening sequence is a drama/adventure film. The reason for it this is because our film is based on drugs, and people of a working class and the struggle with life.  The adventure part is the enigmas and the un certainty of why JJ is left beaten up near a bush in a rural area.  There is a dilemma, a problem and JJ is caught up in this mess. I've done some research, one film that resembles with our film is Trainspotting's. There is a comparison with our film and Trainspotting's plot. I read the IMDb website on Trainspotting the film. This is what it reads:

"Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor), a young man with few prospects and fewer ambitions, lives in economically depressed Edinburgh. Like most of his friends, Renton is a heroin addict who loves the drug's blissful nothingness; financing his habit also provides excitement and challenges that his life otherwise lacks. Renton's two best friends are also junkies: Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), a snappy dresser obsessed with James Bond, and Spud (Ewan Bremner), a guileless nerd who suggests Pee Wee Herman's debauched cousin. Renton and his pals also hang out with Begbie (Robert Carlyle), a borderline psychotic who loathes junkies even though he drinks like a fish. After one too many brushes with the law, Renton kicks heroin and moves to London, where he finds a job, a flat, and something close to peace of mind. However, Sick Boy, Begbie, and Spud all arrive at his doorstep on the trail of a big score, leading Renton back into drugs and crime.~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide" -IMDb Trainspotting (1996) Summary

JJ and 'Mark Renton' both have similarities. They both have a working class background. JJ hasn't been doing well at school, and Mark Renton doesn't have many ambitions. They are both living in a rough area. JJ had taken some drugs the night before he had woken up beaten up in a field, Mark is also involved in drugs, in particular he is a heroin addict.
Opening sequence with audio

This is our opening sequence with audio. I think the audio and strings fits well with your filming and editing. I do think that the Iphone ringtone in the film is too long and too pure, it ringtone should be muffled as if it was on the ground. We are also yet to put some bird sounds throughout the film in particular when he is opening his eyes. We need to edit a few things out as well, we were told that some titles are too long. The film is only 1:32 minutes long, which is 30 seconds short of two minutes. Two minutes is the minimum time we need for the opening sequence. We have decided to add some additional shots into the first few shots, these shots will include of more shots of the landscape, in other words more establishing shots. This should hopefully put some more time onto our opening sequence. These establishing shots would include of shots of our setting, perhaps the sea, the forest, the hills.

Audience Feedback

This is Jack who watched our film. He is 16, goes to the Kings school and enjoys to surf and skateboard in his spare time. He was quite impressed with the filming and editing of our film apart from the fact that the audio wasn't there. He liked the setting of our opening sequence and found it appropriate for our film plot, he also mentioned the make up on Theo's face was very good and looked realistic. We used charcoal pens and purple water colours for his black eye. Seeing as this worked and people liked it, we will be using this makeup method again. He mentioned that video was a little bit grainy, this is something we will be working on. He also disliked the opening shot/ establishing shot, and suggested doing it in another field. Since then, I have looked at different fields to do the filming in. I think I've found the perfect place

This is the field that I think will be perfect to be filming in because, its soon to be spring which means that, daffodils and snowdrops will be coming out soon. Which will make the setting a nicer location. I have suggested this idea and hopefully we can film there soon.

What makes a film?

There are many different roles and jobs in film, here are some important roles to make a film;

Director: They have the responsibility of creating vision of the film. Quentin Tarantino is a very well known director and is also my favorite director of all time.

This is Quentin Tarantino, he is well know for directing films such as Pulp Fiction and the Hateful 8.

Producer: Responsible for making sure the film is good, overseeing the film, contacting companies. George Lucas is a very well known producer and a very good one.

This is George Luca, here he is with  C3po. George Lucas is famous for producing Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

Screenwriter: This person writes the story and the script. William Goldman is a well known screenwriter.
This is William Goldman posing. He is well know for working with the Princess Bride and the Marathon man.

Actor/ Actress: This is where people act in front of the camera. A well known actress is Emma Watson.

This is Emma Watson. She is has acted in Harry Potter and The Beauty and the beast.

Editor: This person is in charge of editing individual shots and editing on software. A well know editor is Stan Lee.
This is Stan Lee, he is mostly well known for being the former president and chairmen of Marvel. Not only is he an editor, he is also a comic book writer and producer. He has edited cameo in spider man and several other marvel films, this means that he has made special appearances as himself in films.

Producer designer: Otherwise known as P.D, a producer designer is responsible for the visual look of the production, a producer designer may design what a movie set might look like. A well known Producer designer is called Dennis Gassner.

This is Dennis Gassner, he is well known for working with Spectre in James Bond.

Cinematographer: Also known as the director of photography. This person is in charge of shooting the film. this person is in charge of the camera and the lights. This person probably has the biggest role in the making of a film. A well known cinematographer is Roger Deakins

Here is Roger Deakins filming in James Bond in Sky fall. As you can see he is lying comfortably filming a Javier Bardem coming down an escalator.

Feedback on our film so far

We showed our film to a few members in a class. We had some positive feedback. We asked Liam, Dylan and Ruben to watch our video.

This is Liam, hes prefered genre is horror, however he said he enjoyed our opening sequence. He said he enjoyed the enigmas in the film.

This is Ruben. ( closes to the camera) Ruben said he ' loves the idea of the film' he said he reckons that there is some sort of action behind all the emotions.  He also said, he and many of his friends would thoroughly enjoy the film. This means that our film is appealing to our target audience.

Our film so far (draft)

This is our film so far, this is our draft, despite the fact that we don't have any sound yet. I have made an ident called Magnetic Productions, I made this with photoshop, Charlie later edited it in using premier Pro. I quite like the titles and font in the first few cuts of the film, they have metallic look about them. I do feel that the titles need further editing thought, because some of the words aren't aligned. For example 'Magnetic Productions' magnetic isnt completely aligned in the middle on top of the production title, it needs to be exactly in the middle, to make it looks like a suitable title. The title then fades into an establishing shot of JJ lying on the floor. After this establishing shot, the film title comes on, however I feel that the title should come before the establishing shot because it could confuse the audience. The tittle JJ then fades into a close up of JJ's hand and phone ringing. You can clearly see that the phone is ringing with the words mum on the phone as it rings. This shot then fades into the next shot, of JJ slowly opening his eyes. This is my favorite shot out of all the shots that we filmed, because, it shows the the mise en scene and the make up on his face that instantly makes us feel sorry for him because he is injured. The next shot, is of JJ standing up, using the bars behind him to help himself up. As he is getting up there are a few dissolved editing which means that one part of his fades and another figure of himself fades into another place. Once JJ has got up he walks over and picks up his phone of the ground, this is a low angle shot. After this he walks past the camera and carries on walking up the walk. Once again, we used dissolved editing, this shows the passing of time. Once we have the sound the film should be a lot better.
New Idea, Research and Planing

We decided to change ideas and scrap our old film because we weren't feeling satisfied with it as well as taking advice from our teacher and student in the class. Our new idea for an opening sequence is much more clear than the our older opening sequence, the narrative and story plot is much clearer. We've decided that our film will go under the a drama/ adventure genre. Our synopsis is of a late teenager called JJ, we decide this would be his name because,  JJ is a name short for such names as Jason or James and another middle name beginning with a J. This gives the connotations of a young adult/ teenager. This name can be associated with a person of a lower class and status. Because of stereotypes an audience would immediately associate of a person of a lower with drugs.
This is our Story board
The first shot is a black screen, this will all of our titles and our film name. This next shot will be a still a black screen, this time there will be diegetic sound of a phone ringing. We hope to use the original iphone ringtone because it is the most widely known as a ringtone. We are also going to use diegetic sound of wind in the fields, because that is where our our story is set. This will hopefully make an enigmas in the audience, such as 'Why is there a phone ringing?' and 'Why is there sounds of wind in a field?' This will hopefully get the the audience excited and guessing what would come next.  This is called a J cut, when you can hear the audio before you see the screen video. The third shot is the opening shot and an establishing shot of a field, with a landscape in the background, on the left corner, there will be a body lying face down in the field, we chose to have the body lying down in the bottom left side of the corner because of the rule of thirds, corners of photo/shot are enticing to the human eye. This creates another enigma in the audience, such as ' Is the man dead?' and ' What has happened to him?' The fourth shot a medium close up of the the body's hand on the floor, with his fingers twitching as he is waking up to the sound of his phone ringing. The fifth shot, is an extreme close of JJ opening his eyes, at this point the phone ringing would have stopped once he has opened his eyes and the field winds will get stronger and louder once he has opened his eyes this, we are going to do this because, now that he has woken, his senses like sound will be much greater and more functional than before, when he was asleep/ passed out. We are also going to put the sound of birds, because in movies, birds are typically what you hear when you wake up. The sixth shot is a shot of the first shot, this time JJ struggling to stand up. The seventh shot, is mid shot, of JJ shoulders and head, with him wiping his face and wiping the sleep off of his eyes, revealing his bloodshot red eyes, black eye, and a gash in his cheek. All the focus will be on his JJ, blurring out what is in the background, this camera technique is called deep focus. The eight shot is a low shot of JJ picking up his phone from the floor. The ninth shot is an over the shoulder shot of JJ looking through his voicemail from his mum and other family members that have tried to call. The tenth shot is a shot of JJ walking away into the distance, his figure will start to fade to another figure of him walking ahead to show the passing of time.

Camera shots

  • Establishing shot
  • Mid shot
  • Extreme close up
  • Deep focus/ Mid shot
  • Low angle shot
  • Over the shoulder shot
  • Landscape shot

Sound and Audio

  • Audio of iphone ringtone
  • Sound of Phone buzzing
  • Audio of wind in the field
  • Sound of birds as JJ wake up
  • Sound of JJ getting up of the ground, ruffling of grass and leaves
  • The ruffling of the grass as JJ walks away
Mise en Scene
  • Black clothing (stereotypically people of a lower status are associated with being chavy and wearing black clothing.
  • Using make up, paint and fake blood for a black eye.
  • Heavily dressed because its cold.
Characters

There will be two characters in the film, 'JJ' and 'Mum'. The mum is a nameless voice actress in the opening scene, this suggests inequality between men and women in our film. Although she is the worried, helpful and caring mother of JJ she is yet helpless because her son is lying face down in a field, bruised and cut. This is to challenge the social inequality, and the audience end up feeling sorry for her. JJ is a young adult who is living in a lower class background. JJ is stereotyped as doing drugs and committing crimes because he has a lower status.

Locations

We have looked at several places to film.
This is the first possible place to film, it is the lower part of Salcombe Hill Cliff. The hazard is that we are filming near a cliff.

This is the second possible place to film its in a forest near the top end of the Salcombe Hill Cliff in Sidmouth. The hazard is that the cliff near by.

This is the forest thats near the top end of Salcombe Hill Cliff in Sidmouth. This would be an idle place to film, because there are lots of trees, which adds to the mysterious side of the story.

Risk Assessment

There are a few risks involved with filming on a cliff, in particular the cliff we are filming on. We have made sure where we want to film and where not to film.

This is the first possible location we can film in, the red lines in the photo is where we must not go because it is a hazard and a cliff edge. As well as near the cliff edge is an area we must not go. The green circle is where we are filming.

This is the other photograph/map of the forest that is our idle place to film. The red lines show the edge of the cliff, as well as ground near the edge of the cliff. The green line is a safe place to do our filming.

Roles and actors
My younger brother Theo is going to be playing the role of JJ, he is 16 and looks the age of a young adult. He is the ideal age for our film, because our target audience are also young adults of ages 16-18.

This is my younger brother Theo who will be playing the role of JJ. This is an old photograph, he looks older to the day.

Feedback from our 1 minute draft

The feedback was negative there were a few points the audience had made about the film. These points are;
  • The camera was too shaky
  •  No evidence of using a tripod
  • The plot was misleading
  • The effects are to wild and vibrant
  • The editing wasn't very good.
After all the negative feedback, we decided that it was clear we had to re film our opening sequence. Since the negative feedback, I've learnt that its important to use a tripod when filming, to create a still shot. I also learnt that perhaps filming in another country (Laos ) probably isn't such a good idea, because its not very accessible. Charlie also learnt that there was no need for such wild and vibrant effects. We've spoken to the two teachers about re filming, and they have approved. We have already planned our next film.

Our first 1 minute draft

This is our first draft. The first scene and first 35" seconds of the film is a dream. He then our character wakes up in bed. The first introductory shot is an establishing shot, its introducing the scene. This shot pans round, showing off the scenery in the surrounding. After this there are a few shots of, a temple to back up the idea that this is a place far far away. Charlie edited the film to have a tint of purple and blue, this create dreamy vibe to the film. After Liam wakes up, the 35 second dream reverses and displays vibrant and energetic colours, this is where we, introduce our film title to the audience. The first shot after the title is Liam putting his slippers on and making his way down stairs to the kitchen, where he eats cereal. This is our first draft, we hope to work more on it and get feedback.
Lighting in pictures

1| Eye lighting

2| Top light

3| Hard lighting

4|  Soft light

5| Ambient lighting ( in background)

6 |Practical light (lamps)

7| Upstage lighting

8| High key lighting

Different types of lighting in film

1| Eye-light
This light is a very special light, its purpose is to the fill the eye line of someone. This is created when something is reflected in the the persons eye. This reflection creates a nice spark of reflection in the persons eye.

2| Topper
This light is positioned in front of a persons face, the lit is often lit on the persons face, in particular lit upon the nose, head, mouth and eyes.

3| Hard light
Hard light is light directly from the sun or other light sources. The light, either of natural source of man made light sources should create defined shadows.

4| Soft light
This light creates the a soft, low defined shadows. The lights are soft lighted. The subject or persons face should look smooth and fine.

5| Ambient light
Ambient light is light that is natural or from the sun. Ambient light can also be lights that are already there, like street lights, car light, moon light, and lights from night clubs lights. These lights are lights positioned where you can see them and not behind the camera where you can not see them.

6| Practicals
This light is purposely on set and are used as props. This lights can include of table lamps, headlamps, and celling lights, these lights would have been dimmed so that it doesn't destruct the the light that is already there, like the cameras of the set, behind the cameras.

7| Upstage
This is when the lighting is lit on when side of a person, while the other side is still shadowed.

8| High key light
This lighting is very bright without much shadow, lots of fill light is used to get this high key effect. This is often used in commercials and beauty products. High key lighting would be used in a heavenly scene in the clouds for example.

9| Low key light
This lighting is the opposite to high key lighting. Low key lighting is dark a and shadowy as well as using the fill light. This is often used in scenes of tension of scenes of vulnerability.

10| Bounce light
This light is when it is reflected of a surface, this surface can include of a sheet, a wall, a mirror etc.

Now that I have studied this it would be very useful to start using this in our media opening sequence and future tasks. It would be quite difficult to get lighting for our opening sequence because our opening sequence is set outside.
Three Point Lighting

1|Three point lighting:
This is a standard light technique used in film. Three cameras are situated around in a triangle a subject, usually a person. The goal of the Three Point Lighting is to create the illusion of a three-dimensional subject in a dimensional image. This illusion lights up the subject. Three different cameras are used to light up the subject, Key light, Back light and Fill light.

(Diagram of three point lighting, this shows the Key light, the Fill light and the Back light.)

2| Key light
This light is the brightest light of the three point cameras as well as being the main light of the three. This camera is positioned 45 degrees to the camera. This light gives the shape and form of the subject/ person.

3| Fill light
The fill light is the second brightest light out of the three. Positioned at a 50-75 degree angle. The fill light is used the fill the area where the key light hasn't reached.

4| Back light
This light is the least bright light of the three. The light must use diffusion to work. The back light is positioned at the back of the subject/ person, to cover the shadows on the shoulders or the back of the subject.

Opening sequence of a film

This is the opening sequence from Hot Fuzz a British action and comedy film. The first shot is a mid shot of what seems to be the main character in the film. The main character is played by Simon Pegg and in the first scene he is walking through an empty corridor. He then whips out his identity card, this states that he is a police officer and his name is Nicholas Angel as well as having the badge to state that he is a British police officer. After this, he walks through another corridor, this time its more busy, this connotes that its a busy police station perhaps in a city. As he is walking through the corridor, there is a dissolve fade, keeping with the same camera angle and then it pans out into him in a sports outfit with other police officers standing around him, he of course is in the middle of the horizontal line because he is the most important. This then zooms onto his face in a close up shot and then pans round to quick cuts of different montages. These montages include of running through fire, finishing a test, getting a police award, answering questions to elderly people, driving a car around a track, fencing, beating his opponent in karate, As this is happening it is cutting back to him walking through the busy corridor. On top of this, the narrator is talking about profile, like 'graduating from Canterbury University, with a double first in politics and sociology' and academically excelled theoretical course work and final year examination. His successes are spoken by the narrator through out the 1:26 minute opening scene.
Diegetic and Non-Diegetic Sound
Diegetic Sound:
Diegetic sound includes the voices of characters, talking and dialogue and even the sound of animals like dogs barking. Diegetic sound can also be sounds of the objects in an area. Diegetic sound can be either on screen or off screen depending on its source, if its inside or outside a frame.

This picture is from the film Hot Fuzz, in which the two main characters are talking, the dialogue is diegetic as well the licking and slurping of the ice cream is diegetic. Ticking noises inside the car or the cars engine is also diegetic. Noise outside the car, like peoples footsteps, people shouting, opening doors, crumpling newspaper, are all diegetic sounds.

Non-Diegetic Sound:

Synchronising Audio and Video

Above the title, is a mic called the shotgun mic, there are also smaller and more compact versions of this device. The mic has a handle held audio recorder attachment. These devices are used because it creates a better sound to what the camera can make and absorb. Once you've got your audio you can blend the video and the audio together when editing.

This is the hand held recorder that we are using to create our 3D sound. We hope to use this device more often in our work.
